With the overall aim of making Kaohsiung a city of high-quality childcare services, the Social Affairs Bureau began turning rarely-used public spaces into public child daycare centers in 2012 to assist families with childcare and allow children to develop in safe environments. The interior design, arranged with young children in mind, holds “family” as its theme with its warm, comfortable, safe environment that encourages play and exploration with educational toys suited to this age group. At this high-quality learning facility for children, we hire a designated number of professional caregivers and nurses based on the number of children registered.
Children of at least 1 month and less than two years old who are registered as Kaohsiung residents are accepted, though priority is given to low- and mid-low-income families, allowing parents in Kaohsiung an inexpensive yet quality choice for their childcare needs. |

Taisugar’s Kaohsiung factory, built in 1901 (during the Japanese occupation) and originally named “Ciaozaitou Sugar Factory,” is an important symbol of Taiwan’s modernization as it was Taiwan’s first sugar factory to become mechanized. The factory commissioned scrap parts from an old sugar industry train engine to artist Liu Dingzan in the making of a 4.2-meter-long, 2,300-kilogram sculpture named Red Bug, which took one year to make and is the first piece of art to be made from the parts of a century-old train engine. In addition, the sugar factory has integrated an exhibition space for the Ten-drum Art Percussion Group and blends in beautifully with the local natural ecology.

In 2016, the foundation established the Ruth Long-term Care Center for the Elderly, which operates under the principles of the Japanese “unit care” model. This model incorporates the aspects of family, society, lifestyle, the individual, and resident-friendliness so as to allow people to age in their own community and give them an environment of compassionate care and community life.

Light Through the Cracks Art Exhibition at the Patriotic Women’s Association |
The Patriotic Women’s Association was originally established in Japan and later brought to Taiwan. It served as a major women’s organization during WWII. Most of the members were highly educated women of the upper class. Their mission was to promote local construction and provide social welfare services. The headquarters were in Taipei, and they founded this branch in Tainan, which was built in 1920. It is a mixture of Japanese and Western architecture, and its floor with a pattern of stacked cubes is quite unique. The wooden structure inside and the tatami-covered floors in the rooms upstairs give the place a strong sense of Japanese culture. Art exhibitions are frequently held here.
The Light Through the Cracks art exhibition has been organized by the Tainan branch of GOH. The exhibition seeks to allow viewers to understand how their gender values have been molded and how violence erupts as a result of biased and discriminatory gender cognition due to the gender constructs and gender imbalance within traditional culture, society, and family interaction. Another goal of the exhibition is to encourage people to actively help those who suffer from gender-related oppression.

Tour of Old Tainan Landmarks
|
A) Confucius Temple:
This is Taiwan’s first temple dedicated to Confucius and was the initiation of Confucian studies in Taiwan, hence its also being known as the “first academy of Taiwan.” The Confucius Temple Cultural Park holds the centuries-old temple as its core, and there are also several major old monuments and streets in the area, situated in a way to emphasize a feeling of space. This is the first attraction in Tainan created as a cultural park.
B) Chihkan Cultural Park:
The Chihkan Tower (originally “Fort Provintia”) was the center of development in Old Tainan. It is one of only a few cultural parks in Taiwan that contains architecture characteristic of the styles of the Dutch and the Kingdom of Tungning (a short-lived 17th-century government in Taiwan).
C) Anping Fisherman’s Wharf:
Originally a fish market, the area is now a recreational park, and the original pumping station has been made into an activity center. All the walls are made of glass, giving it the appearance of an ornately crafted glass house. At the top, you may enjoy a nice breeze and a beautiful view of Anping Harbor.
D) Eternal Golden Castle:
Also known as the Erkunshen Battery, this was Taiwan’s first Western-style fort. It has a moat filled with seawater and old cannons at the top.
